Does Seal of Hub/Rotor Need to Go in Past Flush

Published 10/08/2025

Question:

How far pass flush does the rear oil seal go in when I install it? It is on a 12inch disk brake roter with the oil setup not grease. Also can I use a sleeve on the axle that was made for a grease setup? Thank you Jim Bigrigg

Hey Jim the seal on the hub/rotors like the part # KHR12D that you referenced usually just goes in a little past flush and it's good. You really don't have to worry much about it though if you can get it flush as it's not an exact depth that's required. This is true whether it's grease or oil. Did you convert from grease to oil bath?

Hi C Jameson Thank you for the reply. Yes I am converting over to oil bath. Also can I use a sleeve on the axle that is for a grease seal with the oil bath setup and a oil bath seal? Thank you Jim Bigrigg

@JimB I wouldn't recommend using a sleeve for a grease setup and instead would recommend sticking with everything oil since that is what you are going to. The grease seals don't seal well enough for an oil bath setup.

@JimB Actually I was wrong earlier and didn't understand what you were asking. Yes you can use a spindle sleeve with an oil bath setup. Is there an O-ring on the sleeve where it meets the spindle?
