Is There A Way To Install A 5th Wheel For A Prep Package Onto Above Bed Rails?

Updated 10/02/2025 | Published 10/01/2025

Question:

I was gifted a nice newer BandW companion puck style 5th wheel hitch from a family member. It has the dual jaw and puck install type I believe for a newer ford or chevy. I own a 2003 dodge ram 2500. That had a curt or reese style frame rail 5th wheel installed on the bed. I was curious if there is a bracket kit you sell to install a puck style hitch on my truck. Thank you

Hey Sean,

We do not have a bracket kit to install a hitch base meant for a puck system onto normal 5th wheel rails. What you would need to do to use that B & W is get a replacement base that is designed for 5th wheel industry standard rails. Ford your truck specifically we do have a base that would work with the B & W head you have now, # BWRVB3500. That would install right onto your rails.

What kind of trailer are you looking to tow.

Thank you! I see RVB3550 is a large portion of the system to replace! I guess I'll need to spend $400+ to make it work. Currently still shopping trailers but a toy hauler 5th wheel around 33'. Probably a forest river cherokee wolf pack or Genesis supreme. This truck and installed rail system use to tow a Jayco 5th wheel toy hauler 40'.

@SeanF The RVB3550 would be a good option as well for either trailer you go with. I wish I knew which was better but I have heard equally positive things said about them!
