Is the Gen-Y or MORryde GooseTech Better to Replace a Lippert 1621 Pinbox?

Updated 01/28/2026 | Published 01/24/2026

Question:

Back in November, Jerred wrote that I have a 1621HD pin box and that I would need a Gen-Y GY38FR hitch for my 13,500 lb max fifth wheel. I see that the hitch mentioned is rated to 30,000 lbs. Bit of an overkill, isnt it? Would the torsion bars even flex with such a low amount of weight? I was also looking at the MORryde unit but was unsure which to buy. I have a trip coming up in the spring and want to insure I have the proper unit. My truck is a 22 Ram 3500 long bed.

Hey George, welcome back. I double checked with the manufacturer and the Gen-Y Hitch Shock Absorbing 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box item # GY38FR is the correct option to replace your MORryde part number SPB72-1621HD. It works with pin weights from 1,500 lbs to 4,500 lbs so it is the correct pin box if you want to go with a Gen-Y. The torsion setup will work if your pin weight is at least 1,500 lbs. There's no lower capacity unit which is why the item # GY38FR was recommended.

The MORryde GooseTech 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box item # MR37MV would be the best option if you went this direction. It's designed to replace a Lippert 1621 pin box and has a 11,500 lbs to 14,000 lbs capacity range.

Out of the two options, I recommend the Gen-Y item # GY38FR due to it's shock absorption abilities, assuming your pin weight is over 1,500 lbs. The GooseTech item # MR37MV is going to help you with chucking mainly, whereas the Gen-Y addresses both. The main disadvantage of the Gen-Y is it's got a 1,000 miles break in period.

With either pin box, you will also need the Safety Chain with 2 Hooks for Gen-Y 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box item # GY49GR.

Where are you headed this spring?

Jerred, Thank you for the reply. The MORryde unit was brought up as it has a better price point than the GEN-Y, and I know that MORryde makes good products. The range of 11.5 to 14k rating is a bit light for me I like the cushion the GEN-Y gives me. Just trying to watch the dollars. The spring trip will barely break in the GEN-Y. It's only 1400 miles. The fall trip will test it. 4K miles through Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and up to Maine. I have transitioned from the Pullrite slider to the Pullrite Super Lite, which is great, but I want my truck bed back. After looking at all options available, and your advice (and a friend who has the GEN-Y), I believe I will go with that option. Will I need the shim kit as well?

@GeorgeT You're welcome! The MORryde GooseTech item # MR37MV doesn't have as good of ride cushioning so I definitely agree with your decision to spend a bit more to get the Gen-Y item # GY38FR. As far as the shims go, your MORryde RPB72-1621HD has a width of 12" so you shouldn't need the 1/4" Filler Shims item # GY76FR to install the Gen-Y item # GY38FR. They're typically not needed on the 1621 pin boxes. If your trailer had a 12-1/2" wide pin box box you would. You'll definitely appreciate the extra cushioning and shock absorbing going through the mountains on your fall trip. Since you mentioned the Pullrite hitches, what kind of truck do you have and does it have a puck system? The gooseneck pinboxes don't help with turning clearance.

@JerredH 2022 Ram 3500 long bed with factory puck system. I used the Pullrite slider on my 2020 Rm 2500 short bed. Transferred it to the long bed when I bought the truck. Realized I didn't need it anymore (or the extra weight) and switched to the Superlite. It's a great hitch, but takes time to remove and eats up bed space. At this point in my life, I want simplicity and LESS work.

@GeorgeT Thanks for the information! With a long bed truck you will be good to go! You have plenty of turning clearance. I 100% agree! Less is way more at this point!

George, As a frequent 5th wheeler, I've learned a lot about traveling and part time living in a 5th wheel. The main and important thing should be safety when it comes to pulling a trailer or for that matter anything we do from day to day life. After thorough investigation, looking through reviews, watching videos and life learning experiences, I chose the Gen-Y gooseneck hitch replacing the factory installed 1621 pin box on my 5th wheel. I'm not saying that moreryde is a bad product. They've been in business longer than Gen-Y. I just feel that the Gen-Y was built more stout with better materials in its construction. I used the Anderson hitch before my Gen-Y but my short bed 2020 2500 Ram. It was just crowded because of the large hitch beneath the pin box. My Gen-Y hitch solved all that. I didn't have to deal with the installation and removal of a hitch. My truck came from the factory with a goose neck hitch puck system. Yes, it was pretty stiff for about 1000 miles but is loosened up after that. I'm pretty satisfied and content with the Gen-Y hitch system. I recommend it and think you would be happy with your decision. The GY38FR is sufficient. I hope this was helpful. Be safe, be well, and be blessed. Anthony
