How to Use Stromberg Carlson Trailer Tray Cargo Carrier for A-Frame Trailers with Equalizer WDH?

Updated 09/29/2025 | Published 09/14/2025

Question:

Hello- In have a questions regarding the Stromberg Carlson Trailer Tray Cargo Carrier for A-Frame Trailers - 300 lbs Part Number: CC-255. Upon installation, my Equalizer tension bars are up against the Trailer Tray post brackets. They are within 3/8 of hitting. I am not sure of the bars slide along their support bracket, and if they do, then this will not work. What can be done to rectify this? I have a few pics I can send to show you what I am talking about. Thanks!

Hello Carlos,

It sounds like you’re running into a pretty common challenge with the Stromberg Carlson # CC-255 trailer tray and an Equal-i-zer weight distribution setup. The tray’s vertical posts mount right on the A-frame, and that just happens to be the same area where your spring bars need room to swing and slide during towing. Since your bars are already within about 3/8 of an inch of the posts, there’s a good chance they’ll make contact once you hit bumps in the road or take a sharp turn.

The good news is there are a few ways to work around this. Sometimes the tray can be shifted forward on the frame toward the coupler, which creates more space for the bars. In other cases, raising the tray a little higher helps the bars clear underneath, as long as it doesn’t interfere with your propane tanks or other components.

If this does not do the trick, please respond directly to the email you receive with the pictures you mentioned. If you did get it figured out, what did you do that fixed the issue?

Hey Carlos, did you find a solution to the issue with your trailer tray and tension bars? I'm curious to know what worked for you, as it could help others facing a similar setup challenge.

@KateF Yes, I figured it out. I lowered the Equalizer link plates. I accomplished this by flipping the link plates 180 degrees and installing them upside down, as if I were installing on a bottom mount coupler, even though my coupler is top mount. This is shown in the Equalizer installation procedures, section 4, figures 8 through 10. Note: I contacted Equalizer and spoke to the techs and they were the ones who advised on this install procedure. This allowed the springs bars to slide forward/backwards when making sharp turns and clearing Stromberg Carlson frame mount brackets.
