Is The Crossbar Required When Using The Crossbar-Style Base Plates?

Updated 09/10/2025 | Published 09/06/2025

Question:

Is using the cross bar required? Or can I get adapters and skip using the cross bar?

Hello Dale, thanks for reaching out. If you will be using a crossbar-style base plate like the Roadmaster # RM-523162-4, then yes, the crossbar will be required. There is no adapter to skip using it.

If you do not want to use the crossbar, the solution would be to use a direct connect base plate instead of the crossbar style. Availability will depend on what vehicle you have though.

What is the year, make and model of your vehicle?

I will try to clarify my question. If I buy these pins and not use a cross bar, will the base plates have enough integrity to support my Cadillac flat towing? Already have these baseplates installed and have a tow bar, was hoping to not need the cross bar. https://www.etrailer.com/Accessories-and-Parts/Roadmaster/RM62ZR.html

@Dale No, I cannot recommend using the # RM62ZR adapter since that is for Direct Connect base plates. The Crossbar base plate are not meant to be used in the manner. You will need to use the Replacement Quick Disconnect Crossbar Assembly for Roadmaster Tow Bars # 910021-00.
