Can an AC be Installed on a 14x7 Utility Trailer?

Updated 08/28/2025 | Published 08/26/2025

Question:

I am looking to install an AC unit on my 14x7 utility trailer. I see that some of the complete units I found on your site specifically call out that they are not approved for utilities trailer use. Do you have products that are approved? If not, what are the issues/risks of using one of these units on an enclosed trailer?

Hey Jeff!

It has more to do with the roof structure of a utility trailer than anything. As long as you have the proper bracing in place you'll be just fine installing the 13,500 Btu Advent Air RV Air Conditioner System # ADV95SR on your trailer.

This air conditioner kit weighs in at just under 88 lbs so you'll likely need to add some crossbeams in your trailer so it has adequate support.

What do you use your trailer for?

Thanks for the clarification, Jon. I use my trailer for hauling go karts to competitive events. The pits can get mighty hot during the summer months. An AC unit on my trailer would give me a place to get out of the heat between on-track sessions.

@JeffW That's pretty cool! What's our favorite go kart event you've been at? Do you already have a power setup in mind for running the AC?

@JonG I run a regional series in the northwest called the Supercup. The series visits tracks in Washington, Oregon, and BC. My favorite track is the Sumas International Motorsports Academy track in Sumas, WA. It's a super technical track, excellent racing surface, and the crew there always put on a spectacular event. I have a 2000 watt gas generator to power the trailer. Currently it powers a small DC power supply to run 12v led lighting, battery chargers for cordless tools and to occasionally recharge a small pancake compressor. I know this last item is going to conflict with the AC unit, so I'll have to switch off the AC when I'm running the compressor.

@Jeff I don't know much about racing, but that track does look pretty sweet and a bit difficult - that's awesome! Sounds like you've got a plan set in place and you're ready to go. Good luck with your races, and I hope you enjoy the cold trailer once you get the AC installed!
