Can Lippert 12" ABS Brake Assemblies Be Used On Old Horse Trailer With Standard Brakes?

Published 08/25/2025

Question:

I’ve got an old horse trailer with 8-lug drums but no ABS. Can I still use these brakes?

Technically, yes, they’ll bolt up just fine. But Diane, if your trailer isn’t running Lippert ABS hubs, you won’t benefit from the 12" electric abs brakes # LC83PX. It’d be kind of like installing a backup camera on your truck but never wiring up the screen - everything’s bolted on and looks right, but you’re not getting the benefit it was designed for.

If you’re curious about upgrading to ABS hubs, we could explore that. Otherwise, I’d suggest sticking with standard 12" electric brake assemblies and saving the cost since the ABS module can only be bought through Lippert at this time.

Anyone else retrofitted ABS on a vintage trailer? We'd love to hear how it went.
