Does Lippert 10" ABS Brakes And ABS Hubs For 3,500lb ABS Axle Work With 13" Wheels?

Updated 09/03/2025 | Published 08/12/2025

Question:

I’m upgrading a trailer that has 15" wheels and want to change to 13" trailer wheels. Will these Lippert ABS brakes and hubs clear 13inch wheels?

They sure will, Kristen! The Lippert ABS 10" electric brake assembly # LC73PX is made for use with 13, 14, and 15inch wheels, so you're covered.

If you’re adding new hubs too, just make sure they’re ABS-compatible, either the # LC44PX 5-lug (5 on 4-1/2) or # LC24PX 6-lug (6 on 5-1/2) options would work depending on your bolt pattern. Have you decided if you’re using E-Z Lube axles? That can help simplify bearing maintenance down the line.

Did you already have a shop install the Lippert ABS module and wiring? We don't have this, as it is a bit more involving and not an extremely simple task, but it can be done by sourcing parts from Lippert.

Andrew, if I swap down to 13" wheels on my 3,500-lb axle, will that affect heat buildup in the drums when towing heavy, or is it no different than running 15s?

@Paul The brake assemblies themselves (# LC73PX) don’t care what wheel size you’re running - as long as it’s 13", 14", or 15", you’ve got the clearance. On a 3,500-lb axle setup, going from 15" to 13" wheels isn’t going to push you into overheating territory as long as you’re within weight ratings and your brakes are adjusted properly. Do you do a lot of mountain towing, or mostly flat runs? That can make more of a difference than wheel size. Anyone else towing heavier with 13s? What’s your experience been with heat fade?
