Question:
Does this winch have ratcheting in both directions? I want to control the “free wheeling” when pulling out the strap.

Hi Mike; the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL17021 ratchet only engages in the one direction. When you rotate the handle counter-clockwise to reel it out the ratchet lever will move into the "down" position so the ratchet is no longer engaged until you put it up again. You can still control it with the handle but if you want to hold it in place the ratchet lever will have to be flipped back up so it engages. If you want a winch that ratchets in both directions you can use the # DL15721.
Any big plans with your boat this summer?
