Why Would Trailer Breakaway Charge Status Stay on Charge if Battery is Charged Already

Updated 06/09/2025 | Published 11/11/2021

Question:

I have this system on a trailer and the test light always says recharge battery. I have tested the battery itself for voltage and it is reading out above 12v. When testing the system it defaults back to recharge. When does the battery full light turn on for voltage? If there is an issue with the brake wiring will this affect the readout on the display?

Expert Reply:

If the charge light of the breakaway system part # PS50-85-320 is staying on the charging state that means that box is drawing power to some extent. Although your battery seems like it's fully charged the 12 volt power circuit is still able to deliver amperage to the battery.

Does the battery need to be fully charged before the bright way will function properly?

@Charles Yes, it would be a great idea to fully charge the battery before installing it. The charger might take too long to bring the battery back and God forbid you'd find yourself in a situation when you needed it before it was charged.
