Troubleshooting a Progressive Dynamics 4000 Converter Tripping a GFCI Breaker on a Home Outlet

Updated 07/10/2025 | Published 07/08/2025

Question:

Hello, how can I ask a technical question? My Progressive Dynamics 4000 series converter is working well, except when I plug shore power into a 20 amp outlet at my house or garage, it pops the GFCI breaker at the power source. I though maybe I had my ground wires switched between battery ground and AC ground. I have two big green ground wires, but they are not marked, so I switched them and still pops breaker. Can anybody help me. Im kinda stumped. Thanks.

Hey Ron! My limited electrical experience is thinking you've got a bad breaker or you're overloading it. Does it work when you plug into a standard 20 amp outlet without a GFCI breaker?

Seeing as how this is a residential plug and I am not an electrician, I strongly advise you to reach out to a professional and have them take a look.

Thanks for reply. GFCI pops at two different GFCI sources, my carport and at the house. I turn off all the AC breakers including Main in the power center and still pops. When I disconnect the negative/ground lead from my LiPo battery no popping and I still get power to 12v system though the converter. I.have no problem connecting shore power to a non-GFCI 20 amp circuit or directly to a 30A outlet. I checked my shore power cord and plug on the end, it looks fine. I bought a new 30 to 20 amp adapter, did not help. I was going to double check the DC connection arrangement for external 12v shut off. I do have one of those, not sure if that could be an issue.
