Question:

Will the Rich Solar kit interfere with shore power or my generator? I have a newer jayco small camper and want to use both. Sorry I'm new to this :)

Great question Amanda, and the short answer is nope, not at all. Solar plays nice with your existing RV power setup.

Here’s how it works on something like the Rich Solar Charging System Kit - 400 Watts # RS97VR:
A solar kit charges the batteries during the day using sunlight.
When you plug into shore power, your converter takes over and also charges the batteries.
If you fire up the generator, it works the same way, charging the batteries just like shore power would.

The MPPT charge controller that comes with your Rich Solar kit is smart. It constantly checks the battery voltage and adjusts accordingly. So when shore power or a generator is active, the solar controller just eases off automatically. No switches, no settings, no conflict.

We’ve had plenty of folks use solar to top off during the day, then plug in at camp or crank the generator on cloudy stretches or at night with zero issues.

Just let us know your trailer model, we’re happy to dig deeper if need be. :)

thanks Andy. Is it the transfer switch that manages solar vs. shore power?

@Julia Hey Julie, good question, but no, the transfer switch doesn’t control solar at all. The solar charge controller (included with your Rich Solar kit) handles battery charging from the panels and automatically backs off when shore power or a generator is active. The converter/charger charges the batteries from AC power when plugged in to shore or generator. The transfer switch just routes AC power between shore and generator and it doesn’t interact with the batteries or solar at all. Each system handles its own job, and they all work together without conflict.
