Why Do the Running Lights on My Camper Only Work When My Headlights are Set to On?
Updated 07/03/2025 | Published 06/27/2025 >
Question:
My running lights on my trailer do not work when the tow vehicle lights are on auto, but work if I turn the lights to always on. Im baffled or is that how the system is supposed to work? 2009 Chevy Tahoe with factory tow package and 2002 Starcraft pop up camper.

Hello Lois,
It’s not uncommon for trailer running lights to work only when the vehicle’s headlights are manually turned on rather than set to Auto. In your case, with your 2009 Chevy Tahoe and a Starcraft pop-up camper, the automatic headlight mode won't fully power the trailer’s taillight circuit unless it’s dark enough for the system to activate completely. When you switch the headlights to the On position, the circuit receives full power, allowing the trailer lights to function properly. Annoying thing to have to put them to On, my issue would be to remember to turn them off. But just as long as you have working lights while towing, that is what really matters.

Hi Kate, Thank you so much for your reply. I asked everyone I knew about the issue and no one had an answer. It does make sense though. My Jeep doesn't have auto headlights and the running lights work fine with it. I don't take it though. I downsized from a large camper to the pop up when my husband passed almost 5 years ago. I couldn't see myself pulling that thing around. This is the first year that I've taken it out and just 2 weeks ago did a 600+ mile trip from my hometown of Bozeman, MT down through Yellowstone and the Tetons and over into Idaho. I like the small size and being one who likes to stop often for photo ops the pop up is perfect. Unfortunately, it's not bear proof so I really have to take that into consideration when I travel. Have a safe holiday! Lois
