Updated 09/02/2025 | Published 06/19/2025

Question:

I will be flat towing a 2011 Subaru outback behind my motorhome. What harness do I need to operate brakes and turn signals on my outback, while being towed? Thank you

Hey John! A 4-way like the # 119147KIT you were looking at is only for trailers. For the lights and brakes on your 2011 Outback you will need tow bar wiring and a supplemental brake system. I recommend the following:

-Roadmaster 4-Diode Universal Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles # RM-15267

-Demco Stay-IN-Play Duo Flat Tow Brake System for RVs w/ Hydraulic Brakes # SM99251

-Roadmaster Brake-Lite Relay Kit for Towed Vehicles # RM-88400

The Roadmaster wiring kit will take care of your lights and then you can add a charge line # RM-156-25 to the connector if you want one. The Stay-IN-Play Duo is a permanent system so it is always set up and ready to go. It is designed for hydraulic brakes so if your motorhome has air brakes you need the Demco Air Force One # SM99243 instead.

Do you already have a base plate kit and tow bar? If you don't, you can use the Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit # 920-3 along with the Falcon 2 # RM-520. Safety cables # RM-643 will also be required. The only other thing you may need is a high-low adapter. I went ahead and attached a link below which explains how to measure and choose the correct adapter.

What kind of motorhome do you have?

Hey John, did you get a chance to set up the tow bar wiring and brake system for your Outback? I'm curious to know how it worked out for you, as it could help others with similar towing needs.
