Why Do Trailer Hitches Have Higher Weight Ratings Than The Vehicle Itself?

Updated 10/22/2025 | Published 03/27/2025

Question:

How is the tongue weight and towing capacity of this rated higher than the Q5/SQ5s official tow rating? The manual states a much lower 440lbs tongue weight and close but not quite 4400lbs tow rating.

Hello Adeeb, thanks for reaching out. It is quite common for the weight rating of a trailer hitch to exceed that of the vehicle itself. Trailer hitches like the EcoHitch # 306-X7397 are often tested to higher standards, so they can carry higher ratings. This is mostly a safety thing. Adding a trailer hitch with a higher weight rating does not increase the towing capacity of your vehicle though. Your towing setup is only as strong as the weakest component of your setup, which in this case it sounds like that would be the official tongue weight rating of your SQ5.

Hey Adeeb, did that explanation about the EcoHitch ratings clear things up for you? Knowing how the hitch and vehicle limits work together can really help others understand safe towing setups. Your feedback could guide others comparing hitch ratings to their vehicle specs.
