SumoSprings Kit Recommendation for 2012 Ford E-450

Updated 03/18/2025 | Published 03/10/2025

Question:

I have a 2012 E450 31ft Greyhawk class C RV. It has Hellwig helper springs on top of leaf springs. The Hellwigs reduce clearances on RV components which have had some impingement problems when suspension flexes. Would it be better to purchase Summo springs or Firestone airbags to reduce impingement problems?

Hey Eric, I am sorry to hear about the issue you are having with the Hellwig springs but yeah I would agree going with a SumoSprings kit like the part # SSR-130-54 would be your best option. This will prevent the impingement and also give you the support you are wanting.

Which model of airbags would fit this rv? Why are summos better than airbags?

@EricF It's personal preference but I like the SumoSprings better just because you don't have to maintain air pressure in them or even really worry or think about them at all. Once they are installed they are always there and you don't have to think about them. They also tend to cost less. If you wanted to go the air bag route we have the Firestone kit part # F22ZR that would work. I prefer the Firestone bags as they are the highest quality out there. The advantage to air bags is that you can vary the air pressure in the bags to change the level of support so you do get more flexibility but in general the SumoSprings are already providing the sweet spot of support.
