Can Yakima GearWarrior Cargo Carrier Be Mounted on JetStream Crossbars

Updated 03/14/2025 | Published 03/01/2025

Question:

I’m seeking to utilize the Yakima EXO GearWarrior basket in two ways: One, on the EXO SwingBase as per normal, but also secondly, at times, on my pair of Yakima 60” JetStream roof mounted crossbars when the SwingBase and EXO TopShelf are already loaded with two EXO GearLockers. My questions are: Can I secure the EXO GearWarrior on my JetStream crossbars? Can I remove the cleats on the EXO GearWarrior when I do so, assuming I can? Must I remove the cleats, or can they remain attached to the EXO GearWarrior and simply be positioned between the two crossbars when mounting the EXO GearWarrior? What parts do I need to order to secure the EXO GearWarrior to the JetStream crossbars? I would prefer SKS equipped parts to deter theft if that’s available. Thanks.

Hey Donald! It sounds like you're really making great use of the EXO system. What all do yo use it for? You can secure your Yakima GearWarrior Cargo Carrier # Y37VR on your JetStream crossbars. I was able to pull the brackets off the SkinnyWarrior # Y07014 and install them on the GearWarrior we have here. Based on that you can use the Locking Brackets with SKS Cores for Yakima Warrior Series Roof Cargo Baskets # Y07064 to install it on your crossbars.

The cleats are removable but I can't say for sure if you will be able to leave them on. You can either put the GearWarrior on your roof and see if the cleats sit where the locking brackets would install or just wait to see when you get the brackets. To remove the cleats and brackets just reverse the installation instructions below.

Since the GearWarrior isn't designed with roof carry in mind it doesn't have a fairing like the SkinnyWarrior. You can add one if you want using the Replacement Fairing # Y33KR along with the Replacement Fairing Installation Hardware Kit # Y8870039 to help keep noise down.

Thanks for the response. I appreciate your testing the locking brackets on the GearWarrior. I failed to mention a couple things in my initial question. 1) the Yakima crossbars on my truck are spaced 14-15” apart because it’s a regular single cab 2) because the cab length is short I’m looking to install the GearWarrior length-wise from driver to passenger door, not front windshield to rear. Can you test this configuration out to see if it can be done w the locking brackets and is there a fairing that would attach to that long side of the basket? Thanks.

@Donald I'm sorry to say I don't think that configuration is possible. The Locking Bracket orientation won't allow for it and there is nothing to attach them to if you turn it sideways. The baskets aren't designed to be mounted that way so Yakima doesn't offer a different solution. If you figure out a way to put it on the roof like that you could use the # Y05019 for a fairing. It is 52" long so it wouldn't run the full length but it will certainly make a difference.

@RobinH Thanks for the prompt response. I figured that was the case but I wanted to see what you experts at etrailer might know. I realize most people opt for extended or quad cab trucks these days which allows for the installation of larger baskets on crossbars with greater spread than I can do on the regular cab. Maybe there isn't much of a market for the configuration I'm seeking. I don't think it would be any more hazardous than other configurations. One last ditch effort.....I can't mount a larger basket, say a 42" or 44" one, on the crossbars with a 14-15" spread, can I? I would look odd, of course.

@Donald can you physically mount it up there? I'm sure you can. However, Yakima doesn't have specifications on this so I would say it has to hold to the same requirements as the SkinnyWarrior which requires a crossbar spread of 24" - 38".
