What Bolts to Use When Installing Curt Hitch on 2014 Jeep Wrangler Sahara

Updated 10/27/2025 | Published 02/28/2025

Question:

I tried to install the Curt hitch in a 2014 JL Sahara. As a Sahara, it has the extra plate that must be loosened to install. That extra plate also has the two nuts welded to it for the two outside bolts When I tried to install the outer two bolts that came with the hitch, they would not go into the nuts welded into that extra piece. I reused the two grey bolts that were factory installed. Those factory bolts -are 18mm, not 3/4 like with the hitch. The extra piece is needs to support the Sahara bumper. Are the two grey factory boots acceptable to use? Otherwise, how install the two outside bolts?

Hey Steve, you are fine to reuse the chassis bolts that you did. That's what I would do too if I were you.

Hey Steve, how did things turn out after reusing those factory bolts with your Curt hitch on the Sahara? Your update could make it easier for the next person working with that same bumper setup.

@SteveT using the two factory bolts along with two new bolts was much easier than using four new bolts. And no problems since installing.
