Recommended Hitch Extension for a Yakima EXO Swing Away System

Updated 03/03/2025 | Published 02/27/2025

Question:

I have a Yakima EXO Swing Base to install on my 2024 Ford Transit. I’ve noticed that the spring pin on the passenger side interferes with the door opening. I see two potential solutions - replace the spring pin with a removable pin that’s ed when the rack is open, or the use of a receiver to lower the entire rack. Do you have other suggestions?

Hey Chris! The only solution I have to offer you is to use the Yakima StraightShot Hitch Extension item # Y69VR. It will cut your hitches capacity in half but will extend the Yakima EXO Swing Away like item # Y54ZR out an additional 7-1/2". This is the only approved adapter that will not void Yakima's warranty, including a high low adapter like you referenced.

Additionally, swapping out that spring pin will also void the warranty.

Thanks for the suggested option with the Y69VR, but I don't think that will work. The issue is the spring pin on the passenger side that locks the rack in the open position. If I try to open the rear door of the van when the rack is empty and closed, this pin interferes with the door, but only by a 1/2 inch or so. Moving the pin out by 7" with the part mentioned simply will not do the job, just change the area where the pin will hit the door. Are there any other safe options, even if it voids the warranty?

@ChrisL No, just the extension. Things that void the warranty are the only options so they're not safe.
