Will the Yakima OffGrid Roof Cargo Basket Work with My Rhino Rack Vortex Aero Bars?

Updated 02/26/2025 | Published 02/20/2025

Question:

Hi, I currently have Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero Crossbars - Aluminum - Black - 54inch Long and a Rhino-Rack Roof Mounted Steel Cargo Basket - 57inch Long x 42inch Wide on my 2022 Kia Telluride EX. I have been looking at larger options and have settled on the Yakima Offgrid. My question is would the Yakima OffGrid Roof Cargo Basket - Steel - 75inch Long x 49inch Wide fit on my current bars and vehicle or should I go with the smaller version? Open to suggestions. Thank you! Brandon

Hello Brandon,

Great question! When I look up the bars that you have the Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero Crossbars # RRVA137B-2 I see that they are rated for 165lbs (you always want to double check your roof's weight rating on your 2022 Kia Telluride) and the Yakima OffGrid Roof Cargo Basket # Y07139-09 is around 75 pounds, so that would give you roughly 90 pounds of cargo. The Yakima Cargo Basket # Y07139-09 will work with the width of your Rhino Rack bars no problem, the thing that you will need to double check is the spread. The Yakima Cargo Basket # Y07139-09 with the extension (included) requires a crossbar spread of 36" - 60", and without the extension 30" - 38". Just as long as you have the spread and aren't going to go over the weight rating, this would be an excellent option you. If your cargo is going to be too heavy you could size down, the # Y07139 is 53" Long x 49" Wide would be around 20 pound lighter weighing around 55 pounds.

What do you plan on hauling up there?

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. Right now we are putting a tent, ez up and a couple of cots which pretty much max out the weight at 165 lbs. I saw the roof rating for the telluride is 220 lbs so I would need different bars for more weight. Would it make more sense since to put our soft items like sleeping bags and smaller camping equipment on top and try to put the bigger stuff in the rear? Right now the vehicle is pretty maxed out on space when we go on a multiple day camping trip.

@Brandon My pleasure Brandon. Ya, in order to get the weight that you need it would require to get a new roof rack system. Rhino Rack does not have bars rated that high. I would recommend going with the Yakima SightLine Roof Rack for Flush Rails # Y43GB as it is rated the same as your roof at 220 pounds. You could probably sell your current roof rack on marketplace to get most of your money back. Yes, putting soft, lightweight items like sleeping bags, tents, and clothing in a roof rack makes a lot of sense. This keeps your center of gravity lower and reduces the effect on handling compared to putting heavy gear up top. What has been your favorite place you have camped at?
