Troubleshooting King Pin Hitting Tailgate on 2022 Chevy Silverado 3500
Updated 10/30/2025 | Published 02/17/2025 >
Question:
I have a BandW slider 5th wheel hitch. In the maneuver back position the king pin hits the top of my tailgate. Does that mean I need to raise the height of the hitch or do I need to back with the tailgate down?

Hello again John; the best thing I can tell you to do is try it and see. Raising the hitch might be enough. To prevent contact you could measure where the tailgate sits and then lower it. Let the hitch slide back and then compare to see if it will hit. If it does then you will have to lower or remove the tailgate while you're towing. You may be able to find a 5th wheel tailgate if you want to go that route but none of the brands we carry make one for a newer model Silverado.

Hey John, what ended up working with your B&W slider hitch and tailgate clearance? Were you able to adjust the hitch height or did you decide to lower the tailgate when backing up? Your update could make it easier for the next person with the same setup.
