Fifth Wheel Hitch Recommendation 2025 Chevy Silverado Towing Alliance Valor

I’m going to purchase a 2025 Chevy Silverado 3500 with a 6’10” bed. I’m going to pull a 20,000 gvw alliance valor 40v13 fifth wheel toy hauler that’s 44’ 4” long. The bed is already setup for a fifth wheel hitch. The salesman told me I need an auto skidding fifth wheel hitch. What would be the least expensive but best hitch for for my situation. While making sharp turns and while backing up I don’t want my RV to hit my cab. Thanks, Dan

Hey Daniel, I actually would disagree with your sales guy on whether you need a sliding hitch or not. The short bed of your 2025 Chevy Silverado 3500 is actually one of the longest "short" beds made so that adds turning clearance. Your Alliance Valor 40v13 has a tapered nose and an extended pin box too which was designed for short bed turning clearance without needing a slider so a fixed hitch would work fine and would overall be a better solution.

I'd go with the B and W Companion part # BWRVK3710 that fits your OEM pucks directly and you'd be set with a really nice hitch that's easy to use.

Hi Jameson, I’m picking up my 5th wheel RV. It’s connected to the new hitch that you sold me. It’s not going to work. I can only go forward. When I try to back up I can only make about a 70 degree turning radius and the RV is ready to hit the cab of my truck. As soon as my salesman saw it he said this is not going to work. Then he said I told you to get an auto sliding hitch. Then I showed him the email exchange that we had and he said you were incorrect. I won’t be able to back up properly nor make U turns. I had to use your hitch to get home because the RV was purchased 265 miles away and I wasn’t making another trip out of state. I need to return this hitch and get an auto slider. Can you sell me one ? Dan Govora

@DanielG I'm sorry to hear that. Personally I've never found myself in a situation when towing that I needed that full 90 degree angle when backing up so getting close to that at 70 degrees is going to work for most people. While I can't handle returns and I'd have to direct you to customer service they are going to probably struggle a bit with that since it was used technically. Did you get into any close clearance issues on your drive home? Is i possible your sales guy just wanted to have a "I was right all along" moment? We have been hearing from more and more people that we've sold heavier, more expensive, and noisy slider hitches to that they don't even ever end up using the slider so we've been trying to be more upfront with when/if they'd actually need it and not over sell them.

@DanielG Other thing I didn't mention is that you have a triple axle trailer and if you are at a 90 degree corner you will be scrubbing your tires very hard to point you might damage suspension components etc.

@DanielG Instead of a new slider hitch I have a better solution though. Sorry I keep adding comments to this thread. I feel terrible about this and I keep thinking of different ideas/thoughts. So in order to return your hitch and buy a new one I predict customer service being a hassle about it but I do have a better solution. Your best solution is to keep the Companion hitch you have now and replace the pin box on your Valor with a Sidewinder like the part # RP34FR that is a confirmed fit. This will give you all of the turning clearance needed to make a 90 degree corner and also allows the trailer to track better behind your truck. It does this by moving the pivot point back 22.5 inches. This give you the lighterweight and simplicity of a fixed hitch with even better clearance than a slider hitch. You'll also need the wedge part # SWW-06 to lock the hitch to the Sidewinder. Plus with the total cost of the Companion hitch and the Sidewinder you really aren't that far off from an auto slider hitch like the Demco Hijacker # DM29GV and you get an overall better setup.
