How to Choose Replacement Drums and Brakes for a 1966 M416 Military Trailer

Question:

I need a drum brake assembly for an old 1966 m416 military trailer. The bolt pattern on the wheel is 5 on 5-1/2. It is a 3,500 lb axle. What other dimensions do I need to ensure a hub kit will fit? I am thinking I need a parking brake at a minimum and perhaps an electric brake system. What do you recommend that will fit? Thank you

Due to the age of the trailer, we will want a little more information to make sure we get you the correct hub and drum assembly and brake assemblies. The best way to choose a replacement hub is by using the bearing and grease seal part numbers that are stamped into the metal cage of the bearing and the rubber of the seal. With these part numbers, I can cross reference the correct hub.

If you cannot determine the part numbers of the bearings or seals, then the next best option is to measure the bearing and seal journals on the spindle. You will want to use a precise measuring tool such as a dial caliper because the measurements must be accurate down to the thousandth of an inch. With these measurements, I can determine what bearings your spindle requires. I have attached a photo that shows the part numbers and where to measure on the spindle.

If you want to add electric brakes, then you will want to make sure your axle has a brake mounting flange welded to the axle. The brake mounting flange is typically welded right behind the spindle and has 4 or 5 bolt holes to mount a brake assembly. Can you tell me if you have a brake mounting flange and how many bolt holes it has?

With this information, I can see if we have hubs and brakes that will work for you.
