Should I Use a Bolt On or a Weld on Fold Away Coupler On a Shorelander Trailer with 3x3 Frame
Updated 12/29/2009 | Published 12/28/2009 >
Question:
I have a 17 Lowe aluminum fishing boat with a Shorelander 3x3 tube trailer that I would like to convert to a swing-away. Trying to choose between the weld-on or bolt-on. Looks like there are very specific welding instructions for the former. I am wondering if the added strength of a good weld is much better than the bolt-on model and worth the risk of getting a bad weld job and having the trailer come apart in transit. Appears to me like the weld-on just has a cleaner look. Your opinion?

I more or less agree with you. The Fulton Fold-Away Hinge Kit for 3 x 3 inch Trailer Tongue - Weld-On, item # FHDPW330300, is a cleaner look and if you got a bad weld job you would not have a safe setup. I have done some welding, I am in no way a professional weldor, and in my limited experience a good weld will not fail before the steel it is welded to will fail. If you like the clean look of the weld on I would have a certified weldor perform the operation. If you take the trailer to him the operation should not take long and the price would be worth the peace of mind.
If you like to do it yourself, and take pride in doing a job right, then I would suggest the Fulton Fold-Away Coupler Hinge Kit for 3 x 3 inch Tongue - Bolt-On - 3,500 lbs, item # FHDPB330301, for your trailer tongue. Read the instructions through a couple of times before starting the installation, so you do not miss anything and then take your time. You will have a nice finished project to be proud of. I have not had any complaints about the bolt on coupler and they are a good selling item for us.
When purchasing the coupler do not forget to purchase safety chain extensions (see link) to complete your setup.
