Is Flat Tow Mileage A Concern When Purchasing A Used Vehicle?

Updated 11/03/2025 | Published 01/21/2025

Question:

Had mechanic look over a 2012 CRV that was looking to buy and they said they would not recommend since it looks like was flat towed for a significant number of its 91k mileage. Dealer says it was designed for that so all is good. What to do?

Hello Jennifer, thanks for reaching out. So the 2012 CR-Vs are designed to be flat towed. As long as they are properly equipped, they can be safely flat towed without damaging anything. This is still mileage on the car though so it is definitely something to consider when purchasing a vehicle and it should definitely be factored into the price. 91,000 miles of flat towing is quite a bit, so to me it would really come down to the condition of the vehicle and how well it was maintained over the years. And also the price of course.

So to summarize the flat tow mileage is not a huge concern, as long as they aren't charging too much. I hope this helps and feel free to comment below with any other questions.

Hey Jennifer, how did things turn out with the CR-V after you weighed the flat-tow mileage and condition? Your update could make it easier for others trying to decide on a used vehicle that’s been towed.
