Recommended Hitch and Bike Rack for 2010 Acura TL Carrying MOKwheel Basalt ST 2.0

Updated 11/03/2025 | Published 01/14/2025

Question:

Hey experts, I own a 2010 Acura TL and am looking to purchase an e-bike MOKWheels Bike, model Basalt 2.0. I would like to purchase a durable hitch and 1-2 capacity bike rack. Would you please bless me with your wisdom and recommend the best setup that’s safe and not too pricey. I seem to think I need a bike rack adapter bar that is 1 1/4” to fit my Acura a 2” adapter for the weight a special bike extender for the extra width and finally a bike rack to suit. I want quality. Good warranties and dependabilities. Thule is the industry standard, but I have heard good things about Hollywood Bike Racks. Maybe share your ideal setup with an option or two that is less expensive. I will end up paying more for my bike and hitch than I did my car. Here’s a link to the specs. My brain is fried. I really appreciate your help. My dad was not the do-it-yourself and teach your son kind of dad. I have taught myself the ins and outs of engine maintenance and most household repairs. So when experts help me out, it’s taken to heart, like from a mentor.

Hey James; I would be happy to bless you with my recommendation for the best setup. There is a lot to consider with bike racks, especially with heavier e-bikes, so it is easy to get overwhelmed. It looks like your link didn't come through so I'm going to use the Basalt ST 2.0 specs from the MOKWheel site since that is the only Basalt 2.0 I see listed.

Starting off with the trailer hitch (that's the easy one) I recommend the Curt # C11496. There are only two choices here, and I prefer the Curt since the powder coat tends to hold up better over time. This has a bolt-on installation and comes with your standard limited lifetime warranty.

The bike rack is the more difficult part since you need one that is Class I compatible to match your hitch. It also needs to be able to accommodate 4" fat tires and 68 lbs which is a lot. Based on these specs there is really only one option which is the Thule Epos # TH99XE. I understand it is on the pricey side of things but it has everything you need. This has a capacity of 70 lbs per bike, or 75 lbs for a single bike, so you will be able to carry an additional bike if you want to. It is also a really light rack at 38.1 lbs and folds up for storage. The Epos also comes with a limited lifetime warranty.

You won't need any additional adapters since this is Class I compatible and fits a 1-1/4" hitch. You won't need a bike adapter bar either since it will be able to hold your bike below the seat as seen in the picture below. You will need to get the fat tire straps # TH985101 since the normal straps won't work with the 4" wide tires. Since the bike is pretty heavy, you can also add a ramp # TH43VA to help with loading and unloading. A light kit is also available # TH79XE if you're worried about visibility.

The only other bike rack that could handle that weight and works with a Class I hitch is the Saris MHS DUO Bike Rack # SAR23MR. However, the fenders on that bike won't allow for a wheel mount so this isn't going to work. If you try to use a 1-1/4" to 2" adapter for more bike rack options you run into the problem of hitch capacity reduction. Use of an adapter will reduce your capacity by 50% so you're down to a 100 lb tongue weight capacity with a 68 lb bike and you still have to add in the weight of the bike rack.

I think I covered everything here but if you have any additional questions don't hesitate to reach out in the comments below.

Hey James, how did the setup with the Curt hitch and Thule Epos rack work out for your Acura and the Basalt 2.0? Did the fat tire straps and ramp make loading the bike any easier? Your feedback could really help others looking for a solid e-bike transport option.
