Demco Autoslide - How To Recenter Head After Disconnecting at Slight Angle

Updated 11/03/2025 | Published 01/12/2025

Question:

Hi, I have a Demco Autoslide 5th Wheel Hitch w/ Slider - Single Jaw - Chevrolet/GMC Prep Package - 21K I purchased through etrailer. If I disconnected at a slight angle how do I get the auto slide to recenter so that when I re hitch it is straight? It seems like it is always a little off center even if I do rehitch with the fifth wheel attached and have driven straight for a short distance.

Hey Michael, thanks for reaching out. So, this is actually normal for the Demco autoslide, and to be honest, it is one of the only downfalls of their hitch design. It takes a tremendous amount of force to rotate the head, so if you disconnect at an angle, the head will stay at an angle. This can definitely make it tricky when you go to hook back up. The only way to turn the head is by turning the truck when connected to the camper. There is really no way to turn it manually. I have heard of folks using pry bars to turn the head, but I can't recommend trying this since you could damage something. The only way to get it recentered is by connecting to the camper and turning. Driving straight may not add enough force to rotate the head.

Hey Michael, how did things go once you reconnected and turned the truck to recenter the Demco Autoslide hitch head? Your update could make it easier for others dealing with the same off-center issue.
