Is There Anyway to get a Taller RV Through a Shorter Door for Just Storage

Updated 11/17/2025 | Published 12/30/2024

Question:

I have a 2024 Grand Design 370fls 5th wheel with the optional AC unit making it 133inch high. The maximum height our RV garage is 128inch built based on our then class A. Are there tires 4 that would reduce the height by 6inch totally that would we could change for the existing tires that would reduce the height? We would only use them to back in and out the 5th wheel into/out the RV garage - about 30 feet max each time we want to travel using it, about 5 or 6 times a year. Any suggestions?

Hey Rich so there really isn't a great solution for what you are wanting to do. To drop a total of 6 inches in just a wheel/tire change would require the overall diameter of the tire to be 12 inches smaller since the diameter gets split onto either side of the axle spindle. If it's just to get past like a garage door entry I wonder if you could air the tires down to nearly flat but even then I think 6 inches just might be too much.

If it's a rear AC unit that's behind the rear axles you could maybe try raising the hitch head height of your fifth wheel hitch to see if that pitches the rear of the RV down to allow it to end up sitting lower.

Hey Rich, did you get a chance to try adjusting the hitch height or airing down the tires to see if that helped your fifth wheel clear the garage? Your results could really help others dealing with tight garage height limits.
