How To Secure Extra Chain Links With Pewag Tire Chains PWE2228S On 2024 Toyota 4Runner

Published 12/09/2024

Question:

Im considering purchasing the pewag ladder pattern tire chains PWE2228S for my 2024 4Runner with P245/60R20 tires. Do these chains have some mechanism for retaining any excess links after the chains are installed on the tires? The 4Runner has expensive alloy wheels and I am curious as to how much clearance there will be between the wheels and the chains and any extra links. Can you give me any definitive info on this? I have viewed the relevant videos on your website but they are not showing fitment on 20 inch wheels. Thanks.

Hey Bob, thanks for reaching out. The pewag Tire Chains # PWE2228S will fit the 245/60-20 tires on your 4Runner but they do not have a mechanism for securing any extra chain links. You definitely don't want extra links flying around while you drive and there are two ways to deal with this. You can either secure the unused portion of the chain with a wire tie or zip tie, or you can just cut off the extra links. What I would do is test fit the chains in your driveway and leave an extra link or two then secure those with a tie and cut off the rest.

You will also want to use the Titan Chain Multi-Arm Rubber Tire Chain Adjuster # TCMA2 to add tension to the chains.

As far as clearance, the chains themselves are 1/4" thick. These are not considered low profile chains. Generally, with your size tires the chain would not contact the rim, but that said these chains do not have any provision for rim protection.

Jesse thanks for the quick reply. Would the version of the pewar chains with cams do a better job 0f managing fit? (PWE2228SC). Generally speaking, are cams a weak point in a tire chain? Are they robust? I had the same thought as to removing excess links or zip tying. I'd be worried about a zip tie breaking. Cutting a case hardened chain is a challenge too. Do you have a tire chain that provides rime protection? Not sure what that would be. Jesse thanks for your patience.

@BobH Happy to help, Bob. Yes, the chains with cams do a better job of getting a snug fit. The cams are pretty robust and they are definitely not considered a "weak point" of the chain. They can handle any amount of tension you could realistically place on the chain. There are chains out there that offer rim protection like the Konig K-summit chains such as part # th02230k45 just for example. They mount to the lug nut and the chain contacts the tire tread only Unfortunately though there are no rim protection chains that will fit the 245/60-20 tires so you will have to stick with the ladder pattern. I have had success cutting the chain links with a bolt cutter so you could do that or an angle grinder. Personally I would not feel comfortable securing chains with zip ties. Although the manufacturer does list this as an "approved method" for securing extra links.
