Recommended 5th Wheel Hitch for 2014 Ford F-450 With OEM Prep Package

Updated 12/15/2025 | Published 11/17/2024

Question:

I really need some help. We are buying a fifth wheel camper to live in while we build our house and I have found a 2014 Ford f-450 that has the OEM fifth wheel prep package in it. Unfortunately thats really all I know about a fifth wheel. I dont know which hitch I need to buy to install. The camper weighs 13,000 lb. I would appreciate any information or recommendations you could give me.

Hi James; since you have the prep package in your 2014 Ford F-450 that makes things pretty easy. I'm going to give you two options depending on your situation. If you plan on towing this quite a bit, and you plan on 5th wheel towing after your house is built, I would get the B&W Companion # BWRVK3300. The Companion is one of the best out there and will give you a great towing experience.

However, since it sounds like this is temporary you may not want to invest so much in a 5th wheel hitch. If you don't really plan to move the trailer, and you're going to sell the 5th wheel once your house is built, a better choice would be the Curt E16 # C97PV. This hitch will attach to the puck system using an adapter. I would not recommend this hitch if you plan to do a lot of towing but it will get the job done.

I'm assuming with the prep package you already have a 7-way connector in the truck bed. If you find that you don't, you also want to add the Pollak 5th Wheel / Gooseneck T-Connector # PK11893-11932.

Hey James, how did things go with the fifth wheel setup on your F-450? Did you end up going with the B&W Companion or the Curt E16 for your camper? Your update could make it easier for the next person choosing between those options.
