Availability of Class IV Hitch for 2012 Toyota Tacoma

Updated 12/16/2025 | Published 11/11/2024

Question:

I’m trying to find a replacement tow hitch for a 2012 Toyota Tacoma. It came with factory tow package and apparently a Class IV hitch, rated to tow 6400lbs I believe. The previous owner removed and threw out the factory hitch, and all I can find on your site are Class III hitches. Are there any Class IV hitches available? Thanks

Hi Mark; a Class III is the only hitch offered by aftermarket manufacturers. A hitch like the # e98850 has a max gross trailer weight of 5,000 lbs which is pretty high for a Class III. The only way to get another Class IV hitch with the higher rating would be to pull it off of another Tacoma. If you want to install the aftermarket hitch you will need new bumper bracket since the old hitch used them for installation and it is now gone. If they aren't available from a dealer you're going to have to pull them off of an old Tacoma from scrap yard.

Hey Mark, what ended up working for your Tacoma—did you go with the Class III hitch or find a factory Class IV from another truck? Your update could make it easier for the next person trying to replace their original hitch.

@RobinH I was able to find an OEM hitch on Craigslist.
