Troubleshooting 2017 Subaru Forester Muffler Touching Hitch Receiver Frame

Updated 12/15/2025 | Published 11/10/2024

Question:

A local garage installed the 76182 on mt 2017 forrester. The rear muffler hanger rubs on the triangular brace on the hitch. Is there a solution to this? I tried pushing the muffler forward in the bushin, but it creeps back It seems they removed the heat shield entirely

Hey John,

You'll need to bend the hanger for your muffler in order for it to not come into contact with the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 76182 frame.

I actually had this happen when I installed a hitch on my 2010 Town & Country. I had to bend the hanger a few times (in little segments) to get the hitch to not come into contact with the muffler.

The garage that installed this for you should have taken care of it right then and there, so if you don't have the tools to do this I would reach back out to them and have them fix it for you.

Hey John, did bending the muffler hanger solve the rubbing issue with your Draw-Tite hitch on the Forester? Your update could make it easier for others dealing with the same fit problem.
