Comparing Weight Of Class 2 Hitch And Base Plate For 2024 Ford Escape Hybrid

Updated 12/22/2025 | Published 10/23/2024

Question:

I just bought a 2024 Ford escape hybrid not plug in which I plan to tow behind a Mercedes sprinter 3500 HD chassis based RV. I can only tow about $4,200 lb before I max out my GVCW. The Ford escape has a curb weight of 3,950 lb and came with a class two tow package. I need to put a towing base plate on the front of the escape and Id like to remove the class 2 hitch in the back. Im having a hard time finding information on how much the class 2 hitch hardware ways and how much the base plate hardware weighs so I can see if I am increasing or decreasing my total curb weight on the car. Do you have any information on the weight of the hitch and bass plate?

Hello Bob, thanks for reaching out. The Roadmaster Base Plate for the 2024 Ford Escape Hybrid, part # RM77GR weights 55 lbs altogether.

We do not offer a class 2 hitch for this vehicle, so I cannot tell you the exact weight of your hitch. We do carry s class 3 hitch for the 2024 Escape, part # e89YR and it weighs 32 lbs. So it stands to reason the class 2 hitch would weigh just a few lbs less than this. So if you remove the hitch and add the base plate you will be adding about 25 ish lbs to your payload.

Let me know if there is anything else I can do or if you need a recommendation for a full flat tow setup just let me know.

Hey Bob, how did things go with the Roadmaster base plate on your Escape Hybrid? Did the weight difference work out the way you expected once you removed the hitch? Your update could make it easier for others trying to balance their towing setup.

@JesseM I wound up going with the Blue Ox BX2694 baseplate (45 lbs) with the BX4370 towbar (31 lbs). Did not remove the class 2 hitch. By towing with 1/4 tank of gas in car (leaving ~125mi range) we save about 60 lbs from curb weight. GVWR (4760) - PAYLOAD (826) - TEN GALLONS FUEL (60) + BASEPLATE (45) = 3919 adjusted curb weight. With Class C rv GVWR of (11,010) and GVCW 15250 with the class C fully loaded leaves me with 4,240 lbs of towing capacity. So I can load up the car with an additional 319 lbs of cargo (4240-3919). No problems at all! * disclaimer: all numbers off the top of my head. Trust but verify! -) * Can get more ccc by not filling the RV all the way up, -7 lbs per gallon, 26 gallon tank. Can add ~42lbs ccc by filling up to 3/4 tank max.

@BobE This is outstanding info, thank you for taking the time to break everything down so clearly. That’s a really helpful real-world example of how the baseplate and tow bar weights factor into the overall numbers, and I appreciate you sharing the math behind it. Sounds like the setup worked out exactly as planned, with plenty of margin left and no issues in actual use. This kind of detail will be extremely useful for others trying to dial in a similar towing setup.
