Troubleshooting Sag When Hauling A travel Trailer With A 2022 Ram 1500

Question:

Hi, can I send you a picture of my truck with the travel trailer attached. Id like an opinion on whether I might have too much sag in the rear end of the truck.

Hey Tim,

I got your picture and it does look like you do have a little bit of sag while hooked up to your trailer. An easy way to see how much sag you're getting is to measure from the ground up to the center of the wheel well while unloaded and then again while loaded. You'll see the rear come down and the front raise as weight is added. We recommend staying within an 1" or less difference from the factory ride height. With Rams using coil springs instead of a leaf springs you'll typically get a bit more compression.

This can be corrected with suspension enhancement (jounce spring, air spring, etc.) or with a weight distribution hitch. If you're experiencing sway then I'd recommend a weight distribution hitch. To find the correct one we'll need to know your trailer's fully loaded tongue weight.

If you're not experiencing sway then I'd just add on some SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs # SSR-307-40 to help support the suspension and reduce sag. This specific kit has a 1,000lb load leveling capacity with a progressive load control so that your ride quality won't suffer while unloaded. These require no maintenance and will also help with side to side sway of the Ram when making turns or hauling uneven loads in the bed.

Hi Kevin, thanks for your reply. Do I need to worry about a stiffer non-loaded ride in colder weather?

@TimH The weather won't effect the stiffness but there can be a small difference in ride quality. I have 1500lb Sumo's on my Silverado 1500 and I noticed that when my front shocks were wearing out I was getting a front to back spring board feeling and I could feel the spring hitting the rear bump stop pad on the axle. It's not bad, just a bit annoying and can be fixed by stiffening up the front suspension again new components. Going with a lower capacity spring can make this even less noticeable so that's why I recommended the 1,000lb # SSR-307-40. It's well under the payload capacity of your bed so it can help with the tongue weight of the trailer without negatively impacting your ride quality.
