Can 3 Batteries Be Wired In Parallel?

Updated 09/11/2024 | Published 08/21/2024

Question:

I currently have two 6v 220AH AGM batteries wired in series for 12 volts. I have enough solar panel capacity but I need more battery storage so Id like to add one more 6v battery. Can I wire one 6v battery in series with two 6v batteries wired in parallel? Ive drawn up a wiring diagram to do that, however are there any issues such as charging that could arise with this configuration? Thank you!

Hello Merlin. Nice drawing but I do not recommend wiring batteries the way shown in your diagram. Batteries wired in parallel must always be wired in pairs. Your best bet will be to get either two new identical batteries and wire them in parallel, or get two new higher capacity batteries to replace your current two.

Hi again Jesse, But now I'm curious; why would that arrangement not work? Thanks again! Merlin

@Merlin Because batteries wired in parallel must be wired in pairs. An odd number of batteries will not work.
