What Causes Trailer to Sway on Highway

Updated 08/26/2024 | Published 08/21/2024

Question:

So I’ve been on a few online forums regarding towing my new enclosed 8x14 toy hauler trailer as I am having great difficulties stabilizing the trailer during transit. I pull it with my ‘23 tundra and if I can anywhere near 60mph it almost sways out of control or i heavy wind and a passing semi can have the same result. I don’t know where to start on how to remedy the problem And everyone on the forums saying to reach out to you for help.

Hey Robbie, we can definitely help with that. So the main cause of persistent trailer sway is not enough tongue weigh relative to the total trailer weight (needs to be between 10 and 15 percent of total trailer weight). Or, it can be that the trailer is sitting nose high which that can be solved by using a ball mount with more drop.

If trailer is level try and move as much weight forward in the trailer as possible and see if that fixes it. This is almost always the problem. Hopefully you can move some of your toys forward in the trailer. I attached a help article on picking out correct ball mount as well.
