What Radial Tires Can be Used With Higher Speed Rating For Boat Trailer And 4.80-8 Tires

Updated 02/03/2026 | Published 07/20/2024

Question:

I'm trying to find replacement tires/wheels for my Jon boat trailer. The current tires are 4.80-8 4PR Hi Speed Trailer. I will be towing to Canada on roads that have 70 MPH speed limits, so I need tries that can handle that. I think I might want to go with steel belted radials, based on what I've read about them compared to bias tires, if they are not too expensive. What tire/wheel combination would be the best for me?

Hi John,

You're right that radial tires are 100% better for highway driving than bias tires, though the only possible issue is that radial tires are all going to be larger than your 4.7" wide and 16.1" tall 4.80-8 tires. The smallest tire that can replace yours are the 5.7" wide and 21.3" diameter Kenda Karrier S-Trail ST145/R12 Radial Tire w/ 12" Galvanized Spoke Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 # AM31202.

Tires need 2" to 3" of clearance from the top of the tire to your fender and at least 1" of clearance between the inside of the tire and your trailer's frame rail, which you'll want to keep in mind. If you have that - or are willing to remove your fenders - you can go with the # AM31202, which have an 81 mph speed rating. Keep in mind these have a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern, so you'll want to make sure you have that.

If you aren't sure your bolt pattern I have added links below to a help article on how to measure as well as a printable bolt hole template.

Hey John, how did the Kenda Karrier S-Trail tires work out for your Jon boat trailer on those highway trips? Did the extra clearance and bolt pattern end up fitting without any issues? Your update could make it easier for others upgrading from smaller bias tires.
