Can Trailer Suspension Use Bronze Bushing with Non-Wet Bolts

Published 07/17/2024

Question:

i have 2 gooseneck flatbed trailers 20 and 25 feet with 2 7000lb axles. they have 6 leafs and 2 inch wide springs. i use mostly to haul hay 100 miles one way, generally loaded heavy. i need to replace spring eye bushings and bolts but I am not sure I trust the wet bolt not to break I have read several rv threads where people have had issues. several claim the bronze bushings still fail but do last longer then the plastic. is there any reason not to use the bronze bushing heavily greased during install with a non wet bolt? the idea is it might last a little longer then the plastic.? Thanks

Hey Marty, if you used the Dexter Bronze Bushings part # K71-291-00 with a non-wet bolt and everything was greased heavily it's going to work really well. The bronze will last longer than plastic but if not maintained (like anything) they can fail as well.

We don't see a lot of issues with wet bolt failure but they are definitely not the "end all be all" when it comes to hardware.
