Parts Needed to Use 4-Way and 7-Way with 2023 Ram 1500

Updated 02/03/2026 | Published 07/11/2024

Question:

I want to use both the 7 pin and 4 pin trailer light connector on my 2023 Ram 1500 at the same time. However the covers on the connector interfere with each other and prevent me from using both at the same time. Is there an adapter that will allow me to do this? Thanks

Hey Ron, it sounds like you have the 7/4-way connectors that open from the sides which don't allow both to be open at the same time like the # N40975. So you have a couple options. You could replace the setup with the part # 30955 which I actually have on my Tahoe that does easily allow both connectors to work at same time or you could install the 4-way adapter part # C56584 which installs inline with the 7-way connector of your truck to give you an additional 4-way.

Hey Ron, how did things turn out with your Ram’s trailer connector setup? Were you able to get both the 7-way and 4-way plugs working at the same time with the new connector or adapter? Your update could make it easier for others running into the same issue.

@JamesonC Hi Jameson, My RV has a rear view camara that is powered off the RV running lights - which required me to have the truck lights on all the time. What I was hoping to do with the 4-way plug was connect power through the plug to power the RV running lights so the camera would have power. I know this would have required modifying the 4-way and RV to have 12V available to the running lights, but that would be an easy modification for me to make. Since I couldn't do a 4 & 7-way plug at the same time I took another route. I wired the RV battery through a SPDT switch to connect the battery to the RV running lights (through a fuse of course). In the "on the road" switch position the RV battery is connected to the RV running lights. With the switch in this position the truck running lights are disconnected from the RV, so I am not back feeding the RV battery to the truck. In the other "parked or night driving" switch position the RV is connected to the truck running lights and work as normal and the RV battery is disconnected from the RV running lights. I mounted this switch in a waterproof box on the RV A-frame near the battery. I switch it to RV battery powered running lights when I hook up the trailer to the truck and set back to "normal" when I unhook. This ended up being a cleaner solution than the two plugs. Simple and requires one less plug! Maybe someone should invent this! Thank you for following up!
