What Wheel Bolt Patterns are Available for 5,200 lb Trailer Axles

Updated 02/17/2026 | Published 06/13/2024

Question:

I currently have tandem dexter 4400lb axles on my rv. I want to upgrade to the 5200lb axles but I do not want to buy new rims right now. My understanding is that 5200 axles normally have 6 lug hubs. Question: will my existing brakes and 5 lug hubs be able to be installed on the 5200 axle? I do realize this does not change the actual weight capacity of the trailer. Besides the axle will I just need new spring shackles?

Hey Glenn, for the trailer axle capacity of 5,200 lb the only bolt patterns available are 6 and 8 lug. So if you are intent on going to the upgraded axle you would need to replace the wheels at the very least.

Hey Glenn, did you end up upgrading to the 5,200‑lb axles and new wheels for your trailer? Knowing how that swap went could help others thinking about a similar upgrade. Your experience could point others in the right direction.

@JamesonC Yes, I ended up swapping for the heavier duty axle. You will have to find a local welder to weld the bracket onto the proper position for your application. Be sure to verify the placement of the holes for the brake assembly as they are offset and determines the side where the brackets will be welded. I am happy with the upgrade knowing the axles are rated for the entire trailers weight, not just the rear axle weight.
