Question:

Hi there, I am interested in installing 2 Thule Hullivator Pros on my 2008 Mercedes ML320. I have 2 Hobie Passport Kayaks that are 34” wide. Is this possible? Thanks, Jeff

Hi Jeff; you could install two Hullavators # TH898 if you used a roof rack like the # MPG217 with 65" long crossbars. However, the problem will be the weight. I'm not sure which model of the Hobie Passport you have but they're fairly heavy. Since the Hullavator weighs 40 lbs you will be exceeding the 165 lb capacity of the rack and probably your roof capacity with two of them and the kayaks.

Depending on the exact weight of the kayaks you may be able to use one Hullavator along with the Thule Hull-A-Port Aero # TH849000 which only weighs 13 lbs. This gives you a little more room on the total weight. It is also worth noting that this and the Hullavator have a capacity of 75 lbs so the heavier Passports wouldn't work regardless.

If the kayaks weigh too much and none of these options work the best route would be to get a trailer like the Malone EcoLight Sport # MAL43FR.

Thank you for taking the time to research this. My car’s rack capacity is 220 lbs, so the combined weight of the equipment and kayaks exceeds the total weight capacity.

@JeffS so a kayak trailer is going to be the best option for you. You might also want to consider some kind of simple utility trailer since it could transport the kayaks and they're handy to have for general purposes.
