Flat Towing Components Needed For A 1984 Toyota FJ Land Cruiser

Updated 05/23/2024 | Published 05/20/2024

Question:

I have a 2018 Toyota 4Runner which I need to tow a 1984 FJ Land Cruiser behind it. Looking for options. Would a towbar be a safe option this would be mainly in distances of 10 to 20 miles mainly around town and or possibly up freeway slight grades going from 1500 elevation to 5000? Any advice or options would be appreciated

Hey CJ,

In order for you to use a tow bar you'd need a baseplate for the FJ or a for the front bumper of the FJ to have D-Rings and be rated to tow from. Since there isn't a baseplate available you'd need to go with the D-Ring option. Roadmaster offers D-Ring adapters (3/4" thick D-Rings # RM-035 or 1" # RM-035-1) for their tow bars that could go with the Falcon All-Terrain tow bar # RM-522.

You'll also need some safety cables # RM-643 and some tow lights # RM-2120 to remain street legal. With the weight of the FJ being super close to the max towing capacity of a 2018 Toyota 4Runner you'll really want a supplemental braking system to help handle the FJ pushing on the 4Runner, especially if you're going through varying elevations. For this I recommend the Brake Buddy Classic 3 # HM39494. This system activates off of inertia and can be easily installed and removed in just a few minutes.
