Question:
Hi! Im putting brakes on a trailer that is lighter than one would usually need brakes on. The loaded weight of the trailer and cargo will be around 1400 lbs. I am concerned that if this hitch is valved for 6000 lbs the brakes will not function with such a light load. Is it adjustable for a lighter trailer?

For that light of a trailer I would recommend you go with electric brakes. I would be concerned that the surge brakes would not activate properly, and since there is no adjustment for them you would be in a bind.
One of the advantages to electric brakes is that they are able to be fine tuned easily and efficiently. To see everything you would need to install electric brakes on your trailer check out the FAQ article I attached on that subject.
For a brake controller I would strongly recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling controller because of how easy it is to set up and use, and how well it works.
