Question:

Hi, I have a 2024 East to West fifth wheel RV with a Rhino pin box, I also have a short bed truck 5.5Ft with Rambox. I have a curt A20 hitch on it, but because of the short bed and rambox I can’t pull this RV as is. I’ve been looking at the sidewinder as a solution but I’m getting a lot of mixed information as to which one to get and which wedge works with curt A series, but one of the sidewinders on your page says it’s not compatible with curt A series, and the other doesn’t say that… so now I’m massively confused, can you point me in the right direction on what to buy? And will I be able to keep the curt A20?

Hey Jay. It sounds like you are on the right track here because a sidewinder pin box will be your only option for pulling your 5th wheel since you have a short bed truck with the Rambox.

That said, you are right that the Reese Sidewinder cannot be used with the Curt A20 5th wheel hitches. So, you would either need to use a different hitch like a B&W # BWRVK3255 or find a different compatible sidewinder. Using a B&W hitch is what I recommend since the Reese sidewinder is the only aftermarket option we offer.

In order to recommend a sidewinder pin box, I will need to know the pin box size or number of the current pin box. There should be a sticker on the current pin box with the model number and serial number and stuff. If this sticker does not show the pin box size we can usually use the model number and SN to determine this.

For example, the Reese Sidewinder 5th Wheel King Pin with Rotating Turret # RP34FR will replace the Lippert 1621 and 1621 HD pin boxes as well as a few other common sizes. This would go with the wedge # SWW-06 which is made specifically for the Patriot 5th wheel hitch. If you can confirm the number of your pin box, or even post the sticker info in the comments below I am happy let you know what your options for replacing it are.

Thank you Jesse for the information. I have a Lippert LCI Item: 2023020436. S/N S011102397. I don’t see a way to add the picture but those are the numbers on the Rhino Pinbox. Which sidewinder should I get for this? Thank you in advanced!

@JayL Great! The Lippert Rhino box uses a unique bolt pattern which makes this easy. You can use the Reese Sidewinder 5th Wheel King Pin with Rotating Turret # RP34FR. You will also need the B&W # BWRVK3255 5th wheel hitch which will fit the industry standard 5th wheel rails in your truck bed.

@JesseM hi Jesse, curious you stated above that the curt a series doesn’t work with the sidewinder now I’m confused. As all your curt a series have a note that they work with the sidewinder. So is there something I’m missing? Thank you Matthew

@Matthew I believe in the answer above I was referring to the Reese Sidewinder # RP34FR which has a note saying not to use it with the Curt A series or Q series. That Reese Sidewinder aside, the A series hitches generally are compatible with sidewinders. The Curt Q series are not compatible with sidewinders. Hope this helps.
