Options to Fix or Update Brake System on a Tandem Axle Boat Trailer

Question:

I have a 1999 Sea Ray 190 SS with an tandem axle trailer with factory brakes on 1 axle. I believe the complete system needs to be overhauled, as the previous owner did not maintain the brake system. In addition, I use many different vehicles my own and friends to tow the boat. What are my options to fix the brake system? Thanks!

First we will need to determine what type of brakes you currently have. I am going to assume that you have hydraulic brakes since this is a boat trailer.

If the braking system has not been maintained, along with the brakes, you will want to replace the brake lines and surge brake coupler.

Do you plan on using disc or drum brakes and do you plan to have brakes on both axles?

My personal recommendation would be to do a complete overhaul with one of our hydraulic disc brake kits. These all-inclusive kits come with two disc brake end kits, brake actuator with electric lockout, brake lines, and fittings for a single or tandem axle trailer. I have included a link to the kits that we currently have available.

Hydraulic disc brakes perform better than drum brakes and are much easier to maintain. In order to see if we have a brake kit that will work for you, I will need the pattern of the brake mounting flange, bearing and grease seal part numbers, wheel bolt pattern, and axle weight capacity.
