What Could Cause Outside Trailer Tire Wear

Published 04/29/2024

Question:

I have a 2023 Forest River Salem trailer. On my last trip about 700 miles total, I noticed some uneven wear on the outside edge of the back right tire. The other three tires seem to be wearing evenly. This is the side that has the outside kitchen, with fridge, and the appliances are all on this side. Could it be a weight issue for the trailer? Or potentially misaligned axle? Someone mentioned that it could be the cheap tires that came with the trailer, or the fact that theyre not balanced. Any insights would be helpful. Thank you!

Hey James, I would assume that it's most likely a bent spindle or axle that is causing the tire to wear like that. Or possibly a damaged suspension component. Its definitely not it being out of balance though as trailer tires are not balanced.

So first check for a damaged suspension component like a leaf spring or shackle and if nothing is there it would be time to find an alignment shop who can do trailer alignments and let them have a look.
