Question:
I have two heavy Old Town fishing kayaks which I am no longer able to lift much at all. Im 70, and Im wanting to launch boat/jet ski style by backing the trailer in to the water and floating the kayaks off. I really like a number of features of this Yakima trailer, but I suspect this may be a deal-breaker. Im thinking Malone low-bed may be the best option? Thanks!

Hey Drew,
Yakima does not recommend backing the Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer # Y08107 into the water because the bearings are sealed and water could end up ruining the hubs. This trailer is more so designed just for getting your kayaks/accessories to your destination and not intended for use launching your kayaks.
The Malone kayak trailers you mentioned are marine-grade and would be capable of being backed into the water to easily launch and recover your kayaks. We offer a crossbar-style lowbed # MPG464-LB and a bunk-style lowbed # MAL25FR depending on how you want to secure your kayaks.

I might add that, I took my showboat 66 off my roof rack and its roller bar makes loading and unloading a breeze. I just back up close enough to the waterline, then slide my yak back off the saddles, either placing the stern keel in the water or onto a mat to protect it from the ramp before I pivot the bow over into the water. Easy peasy. Put it this way, Id hurt my back a few times loading up onto my roof racks when wind made it tricky so decided on going easy on my aging spine and get the trailer. I’d already had the showboat so moving it to the trailer didn’t cost me anything extra.
