Can Oil Bath Hubs Seal and Cap Be Used with Grease

Updated 03/28/2024 | Published 03/25/2024

Question:

I’m looking to convert my 2004 MasterCraft boat trailer from oil bath to grease hubs. Can you help me with the parts I will need to get this done? The ID of the current hub is 1.98 non threaded. Thanks! Don

Oil bath seals and dust covers on the hub are perfectly fine to use with a grease setup Don. All you really have to do is remove all of the oil and then pack the hubs with grease instead. For grease I would go with the LMX Red grease like the part # L11390 which is very heavy duty and waterproof.

Thanks Jameson! I do think I will need the rear hub seals though since I will have to remove the seal to access the bearing. Can you tell me which seals would fit that?

@DonC I would need more info from you as that hub bore is common on 2k - 3.5k axles. If you can get me the axle capacity or the diameter of the spindle where the seal rides I can let you know.
