Question:
I recently purchased a cargo trailer that has a loading light installed above the rear barn doors with a manual switch installed inside the trailer. It does not have a reverse/back-up light installed the feed from the 7-wire trailer connector was just capped off in the junction box. First, can I use the loading light as a back-up light by just wiring it up with the lead from the 7-wire - it seems it would function as a back-up light when the trailer is hooked up to the towing vehicle, and as an exterior light when operated by the switch using power from the 12 volt system in the trailer. I live in Missouri and cant find anything in the lighting regulations addressing the location of the back-up lights but Ill check with the State Patrol to be sure. What are your thoughts? Second, the LED light that is installed isnt very bright poor quality and I will probably replace it. What would you recommend as a replacement that could serve both functions? Jim A.

You could definitely connect your light to the reverse light circuit on the 7-way. All you need to do is run some wire like # DW02412-1 back to the light and splice it in on the light side of the switch. I don't know of any specific lighting regulations that wouldn't allow this but it is hard to keep track of everything. It is always a good idea to check with MO Highway Patrol.
For a nice bright light I recommend the GloLight LED Backup Light for Truck or Trailer # BUL111CFPG. The only thing I'm not sure about is how high up the light sits on the trailer. You may want to fashion some kind of angled bracket to point the light down slightly for better illumination on the ground.
