Recommendations for Hydraulic Brake Assemblies on a 1993 Trail Rite 3500 Pound Boat Trailer

Updated 11/23/2009 | Published 11/22/2009

Question:

I am looking to replace the brake assembly on my 1993 Trail Rite 3500Lb boat trailer. It has an Atwood Hydraulic brake actuator and am wondering whether to get the free backing assembly or the standard one? Which one would work the best for my application? Thanks.

Whether you ultimately decide to go with free-backing or not, I would recommend getting galvanized brake assemblies. The springs are stainless steel and the plates are galvanized which will help them hold better since you have a boat trailer and the brake assemblies maybe exposed to more water.

I like the free-backing systems better. They will make backing down a boat launch a bit smoother, especially if someone else is backing the vehicle in while you are in the boat pulling off the trailer. The free backing will make any time you have to maneuver in reverse a bit easier. If you have 10 inch hub drums and a 13-15 inch wheel size like the assembly you were looking at, I would recommend part # 40715 and # 40176 for brake assemblies.
